On February 23, 1909, on a frozen lake in Nova Scotia, a silver-winged "aerodrome" amazed onlookers as it flew 0.8 km (0.5 mi) to complete the first airplane flight in Canada. Designed and built by the Aerial Experiment Association under Alexander Graham Bell, the Silver Dart flew 50 times before being destroyed during military trials; around the world the potential value of flight in war was fast being discovered.

From February 10 to 26, 2006 the 20th Winter Olympic Games will be held in the Italian city of Turin.

Minted in proof quality and in silver, the collector coin for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics portrays H.M. King Juan Carlos I on the obverse, while the reverse features a skier during the slalom descent.

The United States is honoring the tercentenary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin, one of this Nation's original scientists, thinkers and founding fathers. Born January 17, 1706, Franklin pursued a variety of interests, bringing new ideas to science and journalism while serving as a leader of the American Revolution. For nearly six decades, Franklin conducted experiments and published insights that still hold true today. The Benjamin Franklin Commemorative Coin Program comprises two silver dollars - "Scientist" and "Founding Father" - available in both proof and uncirculated.
