1758 Pillar Dollar
The 2006 Subscription Coin, the Pillar Dollar, also known as the Spanish Dollar, holds an important place in a collection of Australia's coins showcasing the development of a standard currency and the dollar symbol.
The reverse design features two crowned columns, and these symbolise the 'Pillars of Hercules' - the Straits of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. Between the pillars are two hemispheres that represent Spain's 'old world' metropolis and the 'new world' of their South American colonies. Ribbons are wrapped around the pillars; it is the shape of these that is believed to be the basis of the dollar sign. The coins obverse displays the crowned Spanish Coat of Arms.
