On February 23, 1909, on a frozen lake in Nova Scotia, a silver-winged "aerodrome" amazed onlookers as it flew 0.8 km (0.5 mi) to complete the first airplane flight in Canada. Designed and built by the Aerial Experiment Association under Alexander Graham Bell, the Silver Dart flew 50 times before being destroyed during military trials; around the world the potential value of flight in war was fast being discovered.

Message from the President

April 2008

Will the snow ever stop? According to the weather man, only 3 days are left until spring, it gets harder to believe him each year.

The show in PEI is just around the corner (see ad elsewhere in newsletter) and I really hope that all of you can make it over as I know for a fact that our friends on the island are putting a lot of work into this one. Please try to attend the reception on Friday night and it would be really nice to see as many displays possible. The show medal will be unveiled at the reception and remember the number is limited.

Congratulations to the Coin Cabinet on the arrival of their new store in Saint John (April?). It is always nice to note some positive things happening with our hobby.

Gerard tells me the plans for the August show at Casino Nov a Scotia are coming along great. It is really nice to see that we are going to be able to take part in a great auction at the show.

The Halifax Regional Coin Club is putting a lot of work and preparation into their 50th Anniversary show in October and we will have much more news about this show in our next newsletter.

As of today, there are no APNA shows planned for 2009. Many members keep asking for information regarding such places as Miramichi, Moncton, Bridgewater, Fredericton and Sydney. What happened to the great shows they used to have. Your executive would really like to hear from any or all of these locations, surely somebody in these locations is still capable of putting on a great show.

In closing, I would like to thank the individuals who have already forwarded their dues for this year, either by themselves or through the clubs to which they belong. I would ask that all clubs please forward the new membership lists and dues to us as soon as possible so that our new mailing list will miss no one after April 1st.

Yours truly,
David Wolfe
President, APNA
