The Bank of Canada has issued six series of bank notes and two commemorative notes. Portraits of former Canadian prime ministers and members of the royal family have graced the fronts of Canadian bank notes, while the backs have featured allegorical figures, Canadian landscapes and industries, Canadian birds, and images depicting Canadian culture, history, and achievements.

2001-2004 Series Canadian Journey
These notes are distinguished by new and enhanced security features, world-class designs, and a tactile feature to help the blind and visually impaired identify the different denominations.
1986 Series Birds of Canada
The 1986 series of bank notes was designed with enhanced security features to counter developments in colour-copier technology.
1969-1979 Series
The main characteristic of this series was the use of multicoloured tints beneath the dominant colour.
1954 Series
Significant changes to the design of Canada's paper currency gave it a whole new look that set the standard for the future.
1937 Series
The 1937 series of bank notes saw the portrait of King George VI replace those of other members of the royal family.
1935 Series
On 11 March 1935, the Bank of Canada issued its first series of bank notes.
